Tod Browning's 1932 movie Freaks is a little known horror masterpiece.

Based on Tod Robbins' novella Spurs↗, it tells the story of rich sideshow midget Hans who is seduced into marriage by greedy trapeze artist Cleopatra.​ Besides this already unusual couple, the movie is inhabited by actual sideshow people who, in those days, were often malformed individuals.

Director Browning had himself been working in the carnival industry and was well aware of the general public's opinion about the physical less fortunate performers. ​ His play with his audience's prejudices caused a stir in 1932, as it does today. Freaks↗ can be watched online.
