Hans Christian Andersen's gloomy tale is worlds away from the uplifting Disney version most are familiar with. With this illustration I have tried to capture some of the darkness of its source, combined with the mystery of silent film and the magic of Jean Painlevé's black-and-white marine life documentaries.
